In an inspiring celebration of African creativity and innovation, Nigerian fashion designer Omosalewa Ogunjimi has been crowned the Real Leather. Stay Different. (RLSD) Africa 2026 Most Commendable Designer. Her bold and visionary work, titled EXUVIA, not only showcases her unique design sensibility but also positions her as a leading voice in sustainable fashion on the international stage.

A Bold Exploration of Leather and Design

EXUVIA, Ogunjimi’s award-winning collection, is a remarkable exploration of structure, transformation, and modular design, inspired by the human spine, ribcage, and the natural process of moulting. Unlike conventional leather fashion, Ogunjimi treats leather as more than just a surface or decorative element—she transforms it into the very architecture of her garments. Through modular construction, her designs offer resilience, protection, and renewal, echoing natural biological processes and creating garments capable of transformation and multiple expressions.

This innovative approach not only reflects Ogunjimi’s distinct design language but also highlights her commitment to functionality, storytelling, and material experimentation. With EXUVIA, she has carved a space for herself as a visionary designer championing sustainability and creativity in Africa’s fashion industry.

Triumph at RLSD Africa 2026

The RLSD Africa competition, now in its fourth year on the continent and sixth globally, is a prestigious platform that challenges emerging designers to rethink leather’s creative and sustainable potential. The 2026 edition attracted hundreds of entries from over 12 African countries. After rigorous evaluation stages, only 15 finalists representing countries like Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Uganda advanced to the final round, competing in Apparel, Accessories, and Footwear categories.

Ogunjimi’s EXUVIA stood out to an international panel of judges for its originality, sustainability, and commercial viability. Lead Judge Preston Viswamo described her concept as “spectacular” and praised her creativity and modular design development, noting the design’s strong potential for commercial success and sustainability.

Her victory is especially notable as Nigeria had three finalists in the apparel category alone, underlining the country’s emerging fashion talent and vibrant creative scene.

Beyond Competition: Shaping Africa’s Fashion Future

Ogunjimi’s accolade is more than a personal success—it is a testament to the growing influence of African designers in the global fashion conversation. RLSD Africa has evolved into a crucial platform that connects creativity, craftsmanship, and sustainability with commercial opportunities, nurturing a new generation of designers and building pathways from concept to global recognition.

The campaign, part of the global Real Leather. Stay Different. movement led by the Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA), promotes responsible leather use as a sustainable alternative to fast fashion. With a reach of over 750 million people worldwide in 2025, RLSD amplifies the conversation around ethical fashion and encourages the creation of products designed to last.

Ogunjimi’s designation as the Most Commendable Designer means she will represent Africa on the international RLSD stage in Bangkok, Thailand, in October 2026 — a platform that will further elevate her work and African design on a global scale.
